rnFarm managers tend to work in either animal production, dairy or crop production although some do work with all three. Livestock on farms tends to be pigs, cows or sheep while crops can cover cereals, oil seed rape, vegetables and salad.

rnThe job is varied and includes planning strategies for maximum yield, organizing farm administration, working machinery, organizing associated businesses and managing staff.

rnFarm managers need to have technical and practical competence, as well as the ability to make sound business decisions. Farms are typically run by management companies or single-owner farmers.

rnFarm managers must appreciate the need to satisfy set regulations for safe, high-quality produce farmed in an environmentally sustainable manner.

rnJob Duties/Responsibilities
rn
rnkeeping financial records up to date.
rnproviding bed and breakfast or holiday lets;
rnfield sports and off-roading;
rnpractical activities, e.g. driving tractors, operating machinery, feeding livestock, spraying fields, etc;
rnmarketing the farm's products;
rnbuying supplies, such as fertiliser and seeds;
rnarranging the maintenance and repair of farm buildings, machinery and equipment;
rnfarm shops selling the farm's own and other locally sourced produce;
rncreating fishing lakes;
rnhorse trials, livery stables and riding schools;
rnworm farming;
rnprocessing their own products, e.g. vegetables or cold pressed oils.
rnplanning activities for trainee staff, mentoring and monitoring them;
rnmaintaining and monitoring the quality of yield, whether livestock or crops;
rnplanning finances and production to maintain farm progress against budget parameters;
rnensuring that farm activities comply with government regulations;
rnmonitoring animal health and welfare, including liaising with vets;
rnmaintaining a knowledge of pests and diseases and an understanding of how they spread and how to treat them;
rnapplying health and safety standards across the farm estate;
rnprotecting the environment and maintaining biodiversity;
rnunderstanding the implications of the weather and making contingency plans;
rnmaking sure that products are ready for deadlines, such as auctions and markets;
rnwind power generation;
rnspeciality herds, such as llamas and alpacas;

rnRequirement
rnApplicant must be an Agricultural Graduate
rnWorking Experience is an added advantage
rnMust be a qualified H.S.E officer
rnMust have minimum of OND
